I decided to tackle a rusted Cabrio lower fender with this approach. It's not quite done but you get the idea. BTW this is not a structural area and the steel anchor point for the fender bottom bolt is sound.

Cabrios have a lower inner fender liner as opposed to the 1 piece on the hardtops and in my case the bottom bolt was exposed to salt early in its life so it was not secure. This allowed dirt to get trapped behind the fender bottom and cause rust.

What's really strange is that I checked behind the fender liner of the white Cabrio ib my pic and each side had at least a cup of dirt behind it. Fortunately it was dry with zero evidence of rust but I'd say cleaning that area out annually is required maintenance.

This is what I need for that bit that rusts out when the antenna grommet dries out and cracks. And for a bit under the carpet. It's not quite big enough to need to weld in a new piece of metal. Ie I was thinking of cutting it out with a 1.5 inch hole saw

Rust repair involves removing rust and or removing the corroded part and replacing it.
And this is not it. I'm not muchth for hiding rust. I've seen too much of at and I do not like it.

+1. This is a patch, not a repair.

I also concur. Someone "repaired" the rocker panels on my MGB with fiberglass. After pulling it off (by hand I might add), TONS of small rust spots all over the panel underneath.

My "rust repairs" are holding up perfectly using fiberglass mat and POR-15, 5 years and no recurrence! Also POR-15 is not like fiberglass resin. Glass resin is brittle and cracks, POR-15 can flex and give without cracking or letting go of the surrounding metal.

I am considering this option more and more. Please take a look at this pic. It's a view from inside the trunk left rear quarter panel. Non battery side. Por15 or cut and weld new piece in? Hole is about quarter size. Thoughts?

If welding is not an option for you, you may consider body adhesive. Lord makes several different glues made for bonding body panels together and can be as strong as welding. All you need to do is clean up the area and apply with a caulking gun.

If that is the area between the two pinch welds, I would go POR-15 and the fiberglass mat and be done with it. If you do use the POR-15 wear gloves, that stuf takes weeks to wear off your skin.
