    house paint + E30

The paint on my 318is is bad, the roof is getting worse by the month from sun exposure (the diamondblack is now more an alpine shade). I've always wanted an orange E30. I'm considering painting my E30 in the garage (have about a month of time to do it), with a brush, and some paint cans. I want to paint it orange and leave all other trim black.
It only needs to look good from 20 feet away. It would be incredibly cheap and only require me to remove all the trim pieces.

    Thoughts?

I dunno, I would at least rattle can it.

i don't think painting it with a brush will make it look good from 50 ft away. It would be better to just rattle can it, and you know how popular that option is on this board.

would house paint work on my rear lower vallence rolled on? would it stay to the metal?

I think it would probably flake off very easily, especially on the ix where the rear wheels are stick out more and the valance is getting hit by rocks and dirt all the time.

            Stu,

get the el cheapo Ambassador service at maaco or get the cheapest Earl Schieb job. It will look better than Sherwin Williams Latex.

maaco here does a special now and again for like 200. You have to do the prep work, but its not a bad deal.

            It'd meet the 50/50 rule.

I did the exact same thing with my e28. Orange w/black trim. I bought a paint gun from tractor supply (about 30 bucks) borrowed an air compressor, and made a paint booth in my garage. I ended up using kubota orange tractor paint (with rust ihibitor). I just had to mix it with naptha and it worked like a charm! here are some pics.

Or Stu for a good price I would sell you everything you need paint to sandpaper to clear coat, to cleanser in D-schwarz, I bought to paint my IX before I bought the new 318i.

Stu, the Maaco stuff is good advice. I know you can afford a $200 paint job. Keep some wax on it and it will last you a few years and will look respectable even up close.

I vote for $200 at maaco too if you are at all concerned with looks.

$30 worth of flat black spray cans make me want to ride around in the desert looking for gas and the last v-8 to race with. Atleast it looks good at night. When its wet. haha
