How to remove your hood the easy one person way.

    No.

    No.
I often hear people referring to the alignment, removal and installation of the hood as a two person job. Its easy to understand why people have this misconception. One would assume you open the hood while one person holds it and the other unscrews the mounting bolts. However, all three should be done with the

Take the hinges off the car. The torsion springs are very weak, they will not fight you. It's completely unnecessary to remove those six bolts. No more trouble lining this back up and it's now a one person job because once the four bolts are loose, the entire assembly just rests on the core support. Then pull the pin on the support hinge, walk around to the front of the car and lift the hood off. And now you don't have to deal with the hinges in your way when reaching into the engine bay.

Welcome to the rust belt. That's a relatively clean e30 around here.

I don't understand why or how this would be any easier than the other six bolts. It is a one man job with the 6 bolts as well.

            take the hinges off? No.

I've done it tons of times by myself. pop the hood, undo the 10mm bolts underneath, make sure you remove the clip for the shock, and lift it off the car. it's not that heavy (~40lbs). it takes like 10 minutes, tops. lining it up isn't even remotely difficult.

also, once you have it off you can just latch the hinges so they aren't in your way. ;)

Plus you can launch tools at your helpers that they left on the hinge when you pull the release.

                I'm in springfield.

Going to attempt my first timing belt soon, good to know.

Both of these. Half the fun of working on an E30 is using the hood hinge to launch stuff across the garage!

Also, one trick for lining the hood back up. Before you unbolt it, drill an 1/8" hole through the hinge into the hood, one on each side. Then when you put the hood back on, just stick an 1/8" drill back in the hole and it is instantly aligned.

I had the hood on and off 3 times when I did my water pump/timing belt (over the course of 3 days).

Twice I did it by myself.

Just unbolt the six screws, (then have one snap off so next time you only have 5 to worry about), stand in front of the car, and lift the hood off. Be sure to have a spot ready to put the hood down on it's edge.

For re-installation, I just used the outline of the copious amounts of Cosmoline in my engine bay, and the hood went back on perfectly.
