9 hours later, almost done with bumpers (new pics pg. 2)

Today, I began painting my bumpers satin black, along with all the bumper trim and shrouds. Here's some pics for y'all. I did the door handles after I took all the pics, and I was too tired to go back in the house and get the camera. The only thing I haven't done yet is the wiper arm grills and the side moldings, only because I want to get new clips for the moldings. The primer on the bumpers came out great, this shit is seriously heavy-duty. I did 3 coats of it, and it's hard as a rock already. I have to let it dry for 24 hours before I paint it, so they'll be painted tomorrow. I cleaned the bumpers with super-hot water and soap, wiped the bumpers and all the trim down throroughly with acetone, then sanded the bumpers down with 80 grit sandpaper (my arms are so sore.

    Here's the primer I used ($24 a can...)

It's a 2-part epoxy primer, you actually use this little thing on the top the puncture a cylinder inside the can, which is the catalyst for the primer, and you have to use it within 4 hours of mixing it. But I used the whole can, so it's all good. I was going to use a self-etching primer, but I was told by the guy at the paint shop that as long as I use a coarse enough sandpaper, and this primer, I'll get perfect adhesion, and it will end up holding better than the self-etching. He told me that in the case of painting bumpers such as these, you want something that's not going to be doing 2 jobs at once, and that the self-etching primer is really meant for things like chrome. He painted the aluminum bumpers of an E21 with this same primer and SEM, and in the 5 years he owned the car before selling, there was never one chip.

Car up in the air, with all the trim and shrouds off:

Rear bumper after 3rd coat of primer:

Front bumper, 3rd coat of primer:

Bumper trim and bumper shrouds, 3 coats of SEM:

    Rear bumper side shroud:

    Misc trim:

    More trim:

Nope, they'll satin black using SEM, to match the trim and shrouds.

Forgot to add, I also got red sidemarkers to replace the amber ones at the front, and it looks A LOT better. My plan to phase out amber and chrome from my car is almost complete. :D

Anything is better than the amber ones, IMO. I just think the amber sidemarkers and turn signals look totally wrong, especially on a black car. Red goes much better. I'm either getting smoked or clear lenses for the turns.

Man, that is looking great Josh. Bumpers are going to look great when they are done. You've done some great, even coats on all those trim pieces.

I should have recommended plastic bumper filler for all those knicks in your trim. I used it in mine before I painted them. It's a product made by 3M and you can fill in scratches/knicks with it, then sand them flush.

Let's drive fast and have fun.

Thanks, TJ. I think I did a pretty good job. I'm nervous about painting the bumpers tomorrow, but it should be alright.

I kind of thought about buying some of that product (they had it there at the paint shop). I was going to have the bumpers powdercoated, but I couldn't afford to do it before the PNW Picnic ($275). So I think what I'm going to do is have them done over the winter while the car isn't being driven. And at that point, I'm planning to just sell all of this nice painted stuff, and replace all the trim/shrouds with new OEM.

The bumpers? No, they were aluminum. The trim was black, but it was all faded and grey.

Looks good Josh. I thought about painting my bumpers but I am too scared of it chipping and looking like crap down the road.

                          Sold it.

why not put that money and time into an attractive bumper set up?

however the work you have done looks quality... may i suggest wet sanding the bumpers before you paint them ~600-1200 grit and get rid of all the orange peel in the bomb can spray.... it will make the finshed product that much better.

Time? I don't mind spending the time, it's taken me a day and a half. And money? All the primer, paint, and sanding supplies cost me $45.
                              Powdercoating them = $275. Plastic bumpers = $300 + front valence.

Call me insane, but I like the way the diving boards look on my car, especially the pshops I've done with them tucked and blacked out. Also, I love the iS front airdam, it's probably my favorite front end for the E30, and if I were to swap to plastics, I wouldn't be able to use it. I would like to swap to euro bumpers in the future, but the only way I will is if I can get an M-Tech I front and rear apron, also.

I gave the bumpers a very light once-over wetsand with 600 grit, they really didn't need it! I'm really impressed with this primer, it came out smooth as hell, no orange peel whatsoever. The bumpers are painted, they're outside drying right now. I got about 5-6 coats on each one, and they look GREAT. I can't wait to get them mounted.

I thought about that too, but I'm going to have them powdercoated probably this winter or next year, so I'm not worried.
