Agree that this detailing business is a lot more serious than I thought.

I got all excited about shining up my white convertible & bought a bunch of detailing supplies from Griot's Garage. As soon as I opened the box, my kids grabbed the wash mitts and started beating each other senseless with them. I haven't seen them since - they're probably in the boy's room, and it's too scary to go in there.

Im sure this sounds like a newbie question but what do you mean by "QD" when you refer to removing the excess with a mf and qd? im about to get into this for bimmer fest prep

e30 buffed and polished today









clayed than cut with meguiars, than finished with 3m ultrafine polish and zaino

I like to use a brother brand of pinnacle. They are relatively cheap and easy to work with.

Now that we generally understand the concepts of paint restoration, can we get one of you more experienced guys to put together a shopping list for the beginner who wants to do the job correctly?

I usually do an X pattern on the pad.


And by cleaning, i mean get a cloth rag, hold it over the pad still on the machine polisher, and turn it on. It raises the face on the pad, and removes residues.

When you say to clean the pads is that just running them under water and squeezing everything out?

EDIT: do you have any links on how to properly apply the polishes and so on and so forth? I found some a while ago but can't find them at the moment.

yes they can. When used on single stage, the paint residue gets put on the pad. Make sure to rinse them off and have multiple sets of the same pad to keep on going.

Also make sure to clean off the pad every 2-3 panels done. The compound/polish/clearcoat or paint gets stuck on there, reducing the friction caused by the pad

Can the polishing pads be used over and over on different color cars? what's the rule when it come to this type of thing?
