    iX rust issues ... help

so here's the deal ... i went to our local body shop to get an estimate of how much it would cost to fix the rust issues I've got with my ix (just the rear) and they gave me an estimate totaling ~ $3500, which personally blows my mind.

I want to treat these spots before they get any worst and I was thinking about getting a cutout of the rear valence, having someone one weld it in and I can do the sanding, priming and painting myself. With regards to the license plate area and front passenger door, I was thinking about throwing some POR-15 (or any equivalent). I'd hate to do a half ass job on my iX as these cars deserve better ... any ideas, suggestions, pointers ... whatever you got.

I know some of these solutions will only be preventative and not permanent, but thats what I am looking for until I get it done right.;)

    Cheers

I know that I will find more, but I keep telling myself otherwise ;). Getting to know the local guys might help, but I want to know if there is anything I could do for the time being.

sand it down and put por 15 on it.

Ive used it, cant compare it to anything but seems pretty legit

sanding the door area and upper license plate is what I most likely will do. can I paint over POR-15 directly or do I have to sand that down as well, primer and paint.

In terms of the rear valence area, I dont think sanding would be ideal, as it will just crumble.

            cheers

I know por 15 doesnt like uv light so you would prolly have to paint over it. Its made to adhere to rust but i usually try and sand it down to clean metal. You could just use primer and paint. I like using por15 on underside area just because how tough it is. I like it better than that rubber rockguard stuff. I painted my whole subframe with it 2 years ago and it still looks perfect. I should have used it on trailing arms and diff but i used rustoleum on those items and you can see the paint going away and some rust staring. I would compare rust to cancer, if you dont get rid of it or whats causing it.. it will spread. Make sure youre sun roof is draining properly, it will drain out the vents in the rear valance in the back. sometimes those can fill up the trunk with water, or even the lil grommet for the power antana, make sure your battery has the vent/drain tube hooked up good also. I usually go a head and drill a couple small holes in the lowest point in the batter tray area and where the jack goes, just in case some water gets in there to let it drain out.

I will check out the drains for sure this weekend or whenever I get some free time and I think I am going to go ahead and order me some POR-15, primer and some paint. I was also thinking about get a plate filler. I wanted to get one and throw it in there and it will also serve the purpose of covering up that area a little. what think you??

I am still debating what to do with the lower rear valence area. I might try my luck with having someone get me a body cut and taking it in to a shop and having them weld it in.

Dude ... Can't Thank you enough. Cheers

plate fillers fine as long as your not trying to hide anything IMO ;)

haha ... I really like the look of the plate filler (preference), but mostly to cover up the wonderful job I will do of sanding, primer and paint ;). word

meant to ask this earlier ... anyone know someone that has fixed a similar rust issue (rear passenger lower valence) to mine by replacing that region with a clean body cut from another car?? any pictures?

                      Cheers
