Can you provide any update on this rack?
    Has it started rusting yet?
    Carry any loads with it?
Try a bike rack on it?

Can you provide the bar width and thickness so I can compare to a thule to see if my Rocky Mounts trays will attach?

Sorry for the questions, but still skeptical of a $60 rack...

Can you post some info on the wooden planks i.e. dimensions, home depot, weather proofing, etc.
Either way, great job on this and SUPER PROPS!!!
Thanks man, I really appreciate the kind words!

The planks were some 60+ year old native oak I had laying around from when we tore down an outhouse on our vacation home property years back. It has a really great rustic look with dents, knots and a few termite holes and such here and there(long since dead!). I cut them to 41" long. There are a total of seven of them, six of which are 2 1/2" wide and the one in the middle is only 2" wide. They are about 3/4" thick or so.

For finishing I smoothed all the corners and edges and went with a thick layer of Miniwax's Jacobean stain and then after it was dry took a rag with mineral spirits and rubbed on the face of the boards to take some stain away from the centers and high spots. After it was dry I coated them with about 5 coats of satin spray on varnish.

Then I measured and spaced them out evenly and mounted them with carriage bolts and these little metal plates underneath that I found at the local hardware store.

Thanks, I agree! It does have a pretty loud wind noise, so for daily driving I am going to have to make a fairing of some sorts.

subscribed for pics. I'm thinking of getting one to hack up and modify my vw rack to fit the e30 and then make the basket slide in like a safari rack.
