To those with no sunroof E30's / welding up sunroof...

I hate my sunroof with a passion, and was considering just welding the bitch up and painting over it.

So my question to those who don't have a sunroof, is there a hard surface where the sunroof should be on the inside of the car? I'm assuming there is, rather than a hole with the headliner just covering it.

I don't know if its worth doing this project, but I absolutely hate my sunroof with a passion, and rather have none at all...

Anyone have any ideas as to how to go about this? I hope someone here has done it...

the headliner just doesn't have a hole in it. Its like every other car in the world that doesn't have a sunroof. What do you mean a "hard surface"?

So its part of the frame of the car. I dunno, I thought BMW built in all the options and then built the car to customer specs, so I thought there would be hole there fuck it I just want mine gone.

      Thanks though.

the entire roof setup is different, as there is no sunroof tray in the car. So the headliner is up higher. You'll be battling more if you do this on a sunroof car and don't remove the sunroof tray.

Secondly, are you planning on repainting the whole roof? You'll have to. Once you weld it shut, which you can't just weld around the seam... you'll need mini spacers to align it evenly, you'll need to seal the opening with some form of sealer... (duh). Point being, unless you want to pay some big $$ to have the whole roof repainted/blended and put lots of filler in there you're going to have a crappy and VERY noticeable section where the sunroof was/is.

Add to that that if you leave this entire process to some joe-schmo who doesn't know what he's doing... the heat from the welds will deform your roof and your car will now be a piece of crap looking like a horribly botched hood ride.

YMMV but I say "fuck it" or buy a new chassis.

(all the above comes from first hand experience doing this on race cars, not just behind the desk modifications)

After replacing the headliner it leaked alot, had to tape it up, rain ruined my suede headliner, got a new seal, still didn't stop the leaks completely, its been a pain to get it to work, the headliner piece won't go in without alot of coaxing, wind noise makes it hard to hold a conversation even after adjustments, no real need for one where I live...

You probably have clogged sunroof drains. I have never had one leak in either of my cars.

yeah, your drains are clogged. the seal on top isn't to keep water out.. it's to keep air out so you don't hear it when driving at high speeds.
