    Questions about window tint...

Okay, so moving to Houston at the end of march.

Houston = VERY hot and humid

My car, black on black leather, NO air...

SO, trying to think of ways to keep my self from frying like an egg in the e30.

I like the way tint looks, but only SOME tint. Should I take it somewhere? Or do it myself? (I have a very handy father that can help as well)

Does tint really help with ambient temperature? Can you pick "hues" I HATE the way blueish/purple tint looks. I only like the more amber tints. I would like to go as dark as possible, only because I feel that if tint is going to help keep out the sun, the more dark the better. (am I right?) How do I find out what is legal and what isn't? Can you tint the windshield??

How much does it cost to have it done? What are the best kinds of shops to go to?

    OKAY! That's it. Thanks guys.

    :)

Make sure you get tint that is assured against purpling. I believe that kind is called metallic something, but I'm not very sure. A tint will help keep the interior in better condition, and also help to keep the sun out.

I'm pretty sure it's not legal to tint the windsheild.

I got limo tint on my 3 rear windows, and a) it looks badass b) it helps keep the car cooler. a 6" tint on the top of the windshield is also there. I'm at school in Arizona, so I know all about the heat.

I hate that look, especially the front strips on the windshields. All the windows have to have the same tint percentage in my opinion.

Kristin, you can do it yourself, but its not expensive to have done.

my car came with tint, i don't knwo what percentage, but i do know it's pretty damn dark. the rear window, and the all 4 side windows are tinted, but my windshield isnt. i think it's absolutely badass, i had a blue 4dr eta before without tint, and my arse would constantely get burned by the hot vinyl seats. with a black interior and the tint, it's alot more comfortable nowadays.

Front windsheild is illegal. It can be a do it your self but its very difficult to do right, I did mine three times before I got it how I wanted it. Back window is a bitch. The purple color comes from washing it with amonias if I remember correctly. I just wash mine with soap and water. Windex with turn it purple. You can find out whats legal at the DMV. Mines illegal as hell but Ive never been fucked with for it. Yes it does help with sun alot. It will tell you how much sunlight it blocks out when you buy it. Yes it will help with keeping your interior in nice condition and help to keep it cooler. You are right, the darker the tnit the more sun it blocks out. One more thing.... if your gonna do it your self make sure you remove the windows from the car. Iwould try to do it your self at least once. Its a fun learning process.

Header strip is only illegal if the windshield has a factory header tinting. I had mine done anyway to the level of the factory tint, and wouldn't go any lower so as to be inconspicuous and it doesn't look good any lower imo.

The newer window films are more resistant to purpling than previous tint materials. That is because they have the metallic coating in them. I also understand that one shouldn't use an ammonia based window cleaner to clean the inside of film tinted windows as that will result in purpling as well.

There are colored window films available but they look like crap. Stick with the smoke tint. Go with about a 20% film and do it uniformly. If you go any darker it becomes a safety issue, especially at night.

Yes, it does help to reduce temperatures in the car, but it is a nominal reduction at best. A black car in Texas during the summer with or without window tint is gonna be hot. It may however help to prolong the life of the interior as to UV damage.

I think you should leave the job to the pros if money is not a big issue. My car (2dr of course) was about $150 ( I actually traded out for the job, but that was the $ value) Yours being 4 dr should be just a bit more. Most shops will warranty the film and the install so if you have any bubbling, peeling or discoloration, most will replace for free.

I think on a black car tint is just proper and you should do it. :D

There was some site to find out how dark you can get in each state. Can't seem to find it in my favs.

Something like 5% (limo) in back windows, then 30% for front. Of course you can get darker and get away with it most of the time.

I was thinking 30-25% all around for my car.
