I would definitely rather have a nicely upholstered rear seat in my car but the future plans for this car are some nice fixed back seats with a cage and it will run in the rally's hosted here in northern Cali. I do plan to redo the design of the back piece and wrap it in nicer material but I've got a million other things to do before I readdress that. For now, the car runs great and I just redid the brakes so that is where my priorities are.

If I want to take the family out to ice cream, we'll go in the 76 instead.

I did something similar. I was putting in the race roll bar so the back seat was going to be useless. So I figured I would see how light I could make the rear seat assembly. The leather seats, seatbelts and all hardware came in at 39 lbs. My new back seats setup comes in at less than 4 lbs upolstered and paded. It uses all BMW mount hardware and it is covered in genuine Ulta suede thanks to a local fabric shop that had a big scrap. With the weight savings I able to install my sub with amp and still save about a pound over factory. Also the Luke sub fires through the ski pass and through an opening in the panel and foam with no distortion.

It solved all of my problems and saved me weight.

I also recovered the parcel shelf with ultrasuede. When I ask people what is missing from the shelf they can never tell me. I deleted the seatbelts and openings when I recovered.

Peg board is actually pretty tough stuff. Granted it would bend/flex a bit if you put any weight on it, but that wouldn't happen in this case. The foam on the other hand, not so much. Unless you covered it in fiberglass. But once again, they are there for show, not to be sat on.

I've always kind of liked the look of bedliner over sheet metal. Just remove everything you can including any brackets and then either use a roll-on kit or take it to get sprayed.

I've seen this on a few e30's with rollbars now. Need more pics of well done e30's. Wasn't there someone that had diamondplate where the seats used to be?
