Got an extra handle for me to practice on?

As an aside, I found out there's a special sewing machine called a serger that will sew that as fast as you can move the materials through it. Got a demo in sewing class over the weekend. Makes me sad I'm doing it by hand.

sergers do not do the same thing. they cut the edge and wrap it with a stitch called an overlock. some sergers can do a flatlock as well which will not cut the fabric edge and will somewhat mimic the look of the mtech stitch but it's not the same.

if you look at the bottom hem of your tshirt that is a flatlock stitch.
if you look at a fleece hoodie or sweatshirt, look at the inside of your sideseams, that is a overlock.

doing it by hand is much better looking and stronger than the flatlock or overlock. if either of those stitch techniques get knicked or the thread breaks the stitch will unravel. lock stitches (the 2 you run before the detail hand stitch) will never unravel, you'd need to use a razor or a seam ripper to tear that stitch down.

i make clothes for a living and i work with these stitches all day.

Interesting. I thought the overlock was the same. So that being said, all the stuff like that from BMW is hand done?

Can you offer any pointers to make the hand sewing part easier? I think I will need to step up to a thicker thread going forward but after practicing I was able to to both pieces of the boot set in about 20 minutes using a curved needle.

thicker thread is good, above TX80. a round point embroidery needle makes it easier to catch the thicker thread instead of catching the fabric/material.

the lock stitches are machine done but i'm pretty sure BMW does all their detail stitching by hand.

TX80 for hand stitching only or for lock stitches as well? I will be picking up a round point needle, thanks!

i would run it for all stitches. keeps it looking balanced.

i think the upholstery thread is 120 or 150. i've never analyzed the stitching on the mtech boots since i've never had them.

Ok. Thanks for the feedback. I'm hoping to get to the upholstery supply this weekend. Hopefully I can pick up some thread.

Got a color sample card for thread.

I think scarlet, Cathay blue, and Oregon purple are pretty close. Opinions?
