as far as seats, i just put a recaro/sparco similar seat in, and its very low. i can still play with a bit of adjustability with the bracket, but i think it will work out nice. I would say a good upgrade would be the sport seats, as they do lower you quite a bit and are more comfortable for DDing than a fixed back seat.

I'm 6.5 and i have 318is sport vinyl seats... they're really nice. 'cept for the vinyl feel (kinda rubbery/skin like) hold you in place, you have about 2-2.5in head room when you sit straight (90* perp. to the car!) so you'll have room, mine are rolled back on all but one notch, and rotated a bit to fit me, i'm about 180, so it's just what i was looking for, (got 'em for cheap too) if you are little bigger then me (heavier) then the ass space might be little tight for you, i'm pretty skiny.

i'm looking for replacements now as the frame sharted itself on the driver's sport seat, and local guys want $150 just to tear it down, let alone fix it.

Then fold the seat forward and remove the 2 screws that hold the seat back cover in place (at the bottom of the cover). The cover comes off by sliding up (there is a clip on each top corner), then off. From there you can assess what is broken, and remove what you need to for leather and foam. There is an excellent write up from Jordan in the Tech section of R3V.

I thought that a tilt steering wheel was what helped adjust for more headroom?

Dave, you die for that pic.

Heeter planted it here first - its a re-post. :D

Rob's seats there are literally about on the floor. I am about 3 or so inches taller than Charlie - and I'd be looking just over the wheel, instead of through the spokes.

I'm 5'6 on a good day. I fit into Miatas and Elise's with no problem, as well as open wheel cars. I can fit into anything with a helmet on.

he's a shade shorter than me... i think...

either way, the seating position is really nice for driving. i look like a little kid in my seat and am 6'1"

the thing i loved most about my acura was being low in the car. helped the whole feel and clear the steering wheel with my big monster legs. i hated my g20 because i was so high and it was hard to work the clutch the first few weeks. when i got the recaro, it was tough to drive again... and this is why i don't like e34 driving position as well

cliffnotes: put your seats as low as possible.

                          I stand corrected - I am 4+ inches taller. :p And I am short!

After being in an e30 M3 with a helmet on...sport seats are still way too high. I might need a setup like heeter. Those Recaros are a pretty decent height. I was thinking about going with a TRS, but I'm not sure if those would be as low. Can you use fixed back seats with stock seatbelts, or is that a bad idea?

my thought as well. No, that's not a bad idea, it's my plan as well actually. If you don't have a roll bar, you shouldn't be running 4, 5 or 6 pt harnesses.
