LOL, yeah I got a couple quotes myself and 2 were enough for me to just save up towards new aftermarket seats instead.

My last pair of sport seats cost $650 to have rebuilt and reupholstered. I had the frames all fixed and re-welded, all new padding put in them, and full upholstery done (black leather-look vinyl on the bolsters, tan cloth on the centers). Done at a local hot-rod upholstery shop, they were fucking sick, too. I sold them for about half of what I paid to have them redone, and they both got manlged by UPS in shipping. Total waste.

i just finished covering mine... a bit expensive but it came out well worth it!
I added foam to the bolsters, under legs and for lumbar support.

$1k isn't too bad for new leather on 2 seats. you can still get new leather coverings from BMW, those cost about $1k EACH.

I need to have mine recovered. it's probably the worst part on my car, other than the windsheild. Maybe this summer.. who knows.

a few years back there was a roundel articule on how to recover your e30 sport seats your self. That was back when Roudel had usefull articules. It looks very easy, the leather, or whatever you are useing, is held tight by metal "pig ears" that you just bend. To make the fabric you just remove your old material cut the stiching so you have pieces that you use as templates to cut your leather. Looks very easy. Then to stich it you ether use a machine or just take it some were and explain what you want stiched.

If you can sew and make patterns you are good to go, that is how I started. Most home machines will not work for this type of application unless you use cloth then you might get away with it. Most upholstery shops will charge you crazy labor if you brought them something to sew, they generally like to keep everything in house.
