I actually like the short throw and notchiness of mine. The weighted ZHP perfected the shorter Z4 2.5 lever setup for me.+1 - thats the way to go.
Factory knobs dominate. OR a DTM shift lever.
Nothing out there compares to the factory ego knob for me. Get new one, hammer it down firmly, and you're in business. If you are ripping that off, you need to calm the fuck down while going between gears.
My gripe? The factory shift knobs are too short. If you're buying a knob for performance, you want something that is tall enough to be close to the wheel so you don't have to move your hand very far to and from the wheel - increasing the amount of time you keep your hands where they should be. All of the knobs today are just stubs - not ideal for truly going fast.
Regarding ripping off knobs, I had to open my moonroof and stand with one leg in the driver's side and one in the passenger to pull that OEM e46 one off!

My vert had a chrome skull shift knob with red LED eyes when I bought it.
In retrospect removing it was a mistake on my part, thankfully I kept the light up washer pissers. The Keystone Killers

Another vote for the ZHP knob... I got one this summer and it's awesome. Feels great to use, and it's nicer with leather as opposed to metal (IMO).
Was a bitch to get on there, though! The old one came off easy enough, but it took some influence to get the new knob on...

Nah, the E30 community doesn't need a shift knob falling apart like your seal kit.
The stock catches break off. Always fun pulling out onto the main straight and going 1-2 having the knob come off in your hand.Comment
