I have never heard anyone claim that the wattage changes the color.

    Theres no reason it should...?

if you bought a brand new kit today, it would be twice as bright as your "just fine" 5-6 year old kit.

HIDs do NOT last forever, and 55w are even worse.

        it's because it's a 6k bulb that's being over-driven. there's no such thing as a 55w HID bulb. :p

Save yourself a few headaches and buy from theretrofitsource.com they offer high quality ballasts in 35 watt and 50 watt as well and with a 50 watt kit you get bulbs built to withstand the extra power from the ballasts. I had a 55 watt DDM tuning kit in my E46, my passenger side headlight started flickering a week after install due to the bad quality from DDM. But hey, it was cheap right? And I got what I payed for. On top of the ballast being crap, both the bulbs were cooked in four months after install. I would have rather spent the extra $$ on a kit from the retrofit source. They're good people.
