Grease like goo on marker light contacts

I had a marker out (front in bumper surround) so figuring it was the bulb I took the bulb out. The contact end and part of the bottom of the bulb were covered in a tan grease like material that was apparently insulating the contacts from the contacts on the connector. After I cleaned it off the light lit.

WTF is it? where does it come from? How do I prevent it's return

    Merry Whatever you celebrate.

Stefan, that goo has 2 purposes. 1, it helps keep corrosion away, mostly by waterproofing. 2, it helps control vibration, which I am sure you can imagine really pisses off the tiny little filament in the bulb.

What I would guess (assume?) is that a tiny bit of corrosion happened on the connections in the socket. You removing the bulb and reinstalling it made better connections.

I always smear wheel bearing grease on my bulbs before I re-install them. On 4X4 or nasty weather rigs or boat trailers, I squirt a wad of silicone (GE Silicone II, 100% stuff) in the socket before I install the bulb. Totally waterproof, they last for years. I learned this trick from an installer from Alaska. He shot silicone into butt connectors before crimping. Hell of a trick!

    Happy Harmonica, Seasoned Greasings!

I had to put greese on the plug connector for one of my turn signals. It kept corroding and not makeing a good contact. The dab of greese in there fixed the problem.
