    I have been thru this thread a few times and still unsure which ones to go for. I just scored a free set of US elips and was thinking of converting from my H1 Hella that I have be happy with for 7+ years with PIAA bulbs.

    I do not want blue! Im pretty sure id be happy with 35W 5K....maybe 55W. Is DDM consistant with "quality" of output? Any eBay kits worth a darn?

        If I were to do it all over again I would stay with Hella H1. I was happy with the DDM 55w 5k in the US ellips. The color of the beam was white and bright, cut off sharp, and on the right stretch of road would illuminate road signs miles away.

        My reasoning is primarily one of style. The H1 was true to the era of the E30 but produced light output of modern optics. In my opinion it has all the performance of the HIDs without the added complication of ballasts or difficulty trying to find replacement bulbs. With my H1s aimed correctly and with the headlights wired so low and highs stayed on at the same time there wasn't a shadow on the road in the mountains.

        Besides if you buy HIDs pretty soon you're going to want to get your fogs done too. Then you're going to re-evaluate your entire lighting situation. Maybe modernize the interior lights to LED, gauge cluster to illuminated, side markers and brake lights to LED....

        It's a matter of personal preference. From my experience the H1s did just fine. Although, it's still cool to watch the HIDs fire up and warm up to color temp at night.

          ^^^Thats one of the reasons why I was thinking of keeping my H1s. I actually like the way they look on the car. My cabrio has smilies w/o HIDs so I guess I have that covered.

            As someone stated earlier, Morimoto bulbs in 4300k is absolutely the best for the price. A full retrofit would be ideal, but its a lot of work with these housings. I did a retrofit in my Tacoma a few years back and the light output was awesome. As much as I like HID's with sharp cutoffs, I've never been one to put LED's in the interior. I just want to see where I'm going!

            Also, the ballast does make a difference in the color of light. I had some older (huge) ballasts that worked great, but one decided to die. I bought a cheap Xentec ballast on ebay thinking it would do the trick, but it wouldnt charge the bulb fully and the light was emitting a blue hue. Very noticable against the side with the proper charging ballast. So I got some new ballasts on Amazon and are emitting the correct 4300k light again. Stay away from Xentec ballasts unless you want 6000k or higher color.

            This is what I bought for ballasts and they work awesome.

              Just purchased a morimoto 9006 hid set and a pair of h3 bulbs that I will use in my fogs. I am assuming you can use your old DDM ballast with morimoto h3 bulbs right? It is just for my fogs so I didn't want to pay for the whole set up.

                      Low beam: DDM 55W 4300K or 5000K (dont remember).

                      Fog light: DDM 35W ballast with 4300K ebay bulbs.

                        Just the passenger side - US Hella Ellipsoid's with full Morimoto set-up: Mini H1 6.0 bi-xenon projector with 35w 4500k and XB LED 6000k in the highs.
