    Wiring my headlights [help]

    I have a '91 325i, US-Spec, but has daytime running lights(Mandatory in Canada >1990)
    I recently bought a pair of Bosch euro smiley ellips.
    They didn't come with connectors but they did come with high beam and city light bulbs.
    Instead of low beam bulbs, the guy sent me an HID kit(35w 6000k H1).

    I'd like to know how to wire my city lights as DRL's, because they're currently set to my low beams..
    and ofcourse how to wire the rest of the lights.
    Yes, I've searched and have found the wiring for ellipsoids and HID's separately but none have had to go through re-wiring DRL's or both at the same time...
    Help would be greatly appreciated.

      Hmmm pretty easy. Just splice them into the side marker/parking lights.

        What about the DRL module?

          Oh there is an actual DRL module that operates the lowbeams? I suppose it would work with the HID kit but then it kind of negates the city light feature. You could bypass the DRL model and just use the city light w/parking lights but you have to remember to put them on. You could also independently wire the city lights thru a switch in the cabin.

            Or you could just find a hot wire that only turns on and off with the ign. Splice your + wire from the city lights in it and then you don't have to worry about having a switch to turn on and off. Cause it will be working from your igniton switch.

              Hmm, that's clever!
              So I'd wire the city lights to the ignition and they'd turn on whenever my key is in. And if I want my headlights on, I'd just pull on my knob?:-?

                I don't want to know anything about you pulling your knob!!!!! :giggle:

                But anyway, get a test light and find a source what only comes on when the ignition is on. And when the ignition is off the test light should be off. And splice into that for your city lights. For your headlights, just wire them up like you'd normaly would.

                  Ahah, I set myself up for that one...
                  By the way, on the knob, theres 0, 1, 2.
                  0 being all the way in,
                  1 being half way,
                  2 being all the way out..

                  There should probably be a difference between 2 and 3 but for some reason, there isn't...
                  The sidemarkers and instrument lights both light up in those positions...

                    It should be

                    0= off
                    1= parking lights+instrument lights
                    2=headlights+parking lights+instrument lights

                      Well my headlights are on all the time, hence them being DRL's...
                      The car's originally from NJ, and was brought into Montreal..
                      I'll check the records to see what work was done for this

                        Wonder what they screwed around with to make the headlights stay on all the time then?

                          Yeah, I bought a Bentley online, it should be coming in this week sometime.
                          I'll tinker with it when I can actually know what I'm fooling around with.

                            DRL-equipped cars use a different headlight relay. I've got a similarly equipped 318iS and have thought about DRL --> City Lights, but am not sure of what needs to be changed to enable this...
