It depends on what you want to do with the interior speakers. I spent a lot on a 5 1/4" Infinity Kappa front components, 5x7 Kappa rear speakers, a high-end Eclipse headunit that has no internal power, and 3 sets of 8v preouts (soooo nice), then I am running my speakers off a Hifonics Zeus ZX440 440 watt amp. The whole car is rewired using double insulated 16 gauge Monster Cable, DEI rca cables, and Monster Cable power cables. I put the front tweeters in the stock pods and put some Dynamat in the front kick panel area.
My point of this post is it makes enough bass to the point that nobody believes me when they say I don't have a sub. I'll pop the trunk and they think they are right when they see my amp but can never find the sub...
Then again, even if you still had the same speakers as me but ran them powered from a headunit, I don't think you could get enough half as good sound.

ahh this post made me mad
Now i wish I woulda bet on these
I had a set of 6.5" midbass woofers I planned to rig in the back deck, but never got around to it. I'd love to do some 8"s a la stealthbox, but alas, other things are more important.
LOL, that 3-way pro series setup is probably around $1200 or so. And they're meant to be all placed upfront. It'd sound like shit with the 6.5" back (but all rear speakers sound like shit...). The 6.5" will play low, but not even near as low as the 10"... well not at any decibel level you can hear anyhow.
Check out illusion audio. They make woofers with the magnet in the front (read: LOW profile), and they're EXCELLENT quality.
$750 on the website. I only suggested that because I found one locally for pretty cheap. And also, losing a 10 and replacing with something smaller, well some sacrifices has to be made.
I recently put somem 6 1/2" midbass speakers in the front doors, running on 150W RMS. I had the same intention as you, to get some more bass without the boominess and weight of a sub. Even though I'm running the rest of the components off of the deck, and that much power to the midbasses, I can barely even hear them. I am convinced the only other way to get bass is to put 8" subs in the rear deck or rear quarter panels.
Seat shaker style bass. What kind of music do you listen to that you need that much bass? Aimmed at everyone in the post.
I listened to metal, hardcore and the like, so I don't need any more bass than my basic interior speakers offer. Thats why I never did subs or anything.

You'd be surprised at how much difference a sub will do. You're missing out on all of the really low frequencies (sub 150Hz probably) that the bass drum and bass guitar are putting out.

im having trouble thinking of how i'd put in a sub.
my ppi amp takes up a crapassload of space on my rear firewall, and that leaves no room for my to have a cabin firing subwoofer, which i want.. so its kind of a tradeoff.. :-/

I know this but it's a car that's old. And we generally have sport tires and suspension equal more noise and exhaust so you never get the proper sounding interior.
So hence why I never have bothered building a great stereo. My home unit is differant story, to bad my daughter couldn't respect Daddy's toys. $1600.00 receiver is now a 58 lbs paper weight.

Oh believe me, I know, and I have considered it for a while. But, for my uses what I have works great. I know I could do an install that adds very little weight and doesn't take much space, but with the money I'd spend on that, I feel like I can spend it on other things that will bring more gratification.
I have the 5504 and I have no problems with it. The knob works well. The only thing is sometimes I will insert a disc and it seems to be playing but no sound comes out. I just eject the CD and put it back in and all is well.
Eclipse still services these, it might be worth sending it in to them. I heard there was a recall on my deck because they have problems with skipping. It definately is more picky about scratched CD's than my old Pioneer was, but its something I have learned to live with.
agh god damn it my goddam 3 year warranty expired ONE MONTH AGO ASDDFGDDSFGASDF. 500 bucks down the shitter. I could have had a 5444 replacement UGH. [/rant]
if you invest in a good sub that will perform well in a small enclosure (~2/3 cubic feet) then you might not have that much of a weight issue at all. i like my stereo as it is right now, but i really miss my subs. just a thought.
I retired my E30 for now...
