8" Kicker Shallow Sub - 3.5" mounting depth under front sets

Has anyone considered mounting some shallow depth subs underneath the front seats in a cabrio?

I found these Kicker 08CVT84 8" subwoofers that have a 3.5" mounting depth, i was thinking about relocating the rear ventilation ducts from directly underneath the middle of the seats to the sides (next to the rails) and then having enough clearance under the seat to make a custom fiberglass box.

I am not looking for a ton of bass but a couple of 8's with decent power underneath the seats in a sealed box might just do the trick...

Is the floor the same for cab's and coupes? i will be stripping my 88 325is in the next few weeks, and would be able to do a mock up if they are both the same (i have sport seats in the IS so the mounting depths and clearances should be the same)..

Has anyone tried something like this before?

First, the Kenwood shallow 8 is far and away the best performing 8" shallow woofer out there right now.

Second, you need a tiny bit (1/2"ish) of space under the woofer to allow for air movement.

Third, you need a floor for the box, so that adds more thickness, for about 4 1/2" total depth...ain't gonna happen in your 'vert.

Besides, do you really wanna spend a bunch of time and a small pile of cash making a tiny bit of bass? Why not do a small buildout on the door, or the rear side panels?

I still wanna do like I did back in about 1990 and chop a hole behind the seat, weld in an angle iron brace and build a (fairly) normal MDF box inside the rear cavity...if I ever get a 'vert!

have you tried ripping out the hvac ducts underneath the seat and see how far it goes down? the bottom really doesnt need any mdf, just a thick layer of fiberglass (i was thinking of making 4 sides and fiberglassing those to the floor and using mdf for the top)..

i found the kickers for 58/pop so its not very expensive for this package, i could be into for under $150 buks both sides... a ton of labour though :)

if that doesnt work have you seen or heard about the earthquake sws-8? this sucker is only 2.5" thick..

i really want a stealth install that doesnt have a ton of bass (don't want the whole car to rattle), just nice depth when i'm cruising....

also what would you recommend for components front and rear? i have the premium package tweeters from my coupe taht i could use the housings from and install new tweets in, do 5.25" woofers fit in the kick panels?

Hey bad azz bmr, Did you ever sort out your sub? Has any one actually figured out how much space is under the seats?
I put a set of 5.25 Infinity Kappa Pros in the front of my vert that I am pretty happy with. I really like the infinity mid range and vocals.

              ^ewwwwww.

If you want a shallow, might as well sprint up to 10" elemental designs which is under 3" and needs only .3cubic. Granted it is not your sound quality pick, but what do you expect from a speaker with hardly any magnet.

I was kind of assuming Ewwwww as well but I have no personal experience with this type of sub. I expected it to fall into the too good to be true category but wanted some confirmation before writing it off. Do you have direct knowledge of Boss sub?

The elemental design you are referring to I believe is this the one below. Has any tried to make it work?
                [IMG][/IMG]
                Top Mounting Depth 3 In.
Mounting Diameter / Length 9.13 In.

I was pleasantly surprised with how well the ED shallow 10 sounds. I am running 2 of them in our Tundra.

Thanks for the link Cramer. Has anyone tried to fit one of these slim subs under the sport seats?

                      I agree with this post.

I just took apart a vert and I honestly don't see any reasonable amount of bass vs effort in trying to fit something under your seat and also being able to slide the seat front/back. I vote for trying to fabricate fiberglass enclosure behind the rear side panels. Did you see how much space is back there? Take a peek back there if you haven't yet...

I just did Aura Bass Shakers in my vert and I'm very happy with them. $60 and nice 4ch and I was up and running.

The under the seat idea is cetainly a compromise and I think Luke is right about the back panel. I leave my top down all summer and having visable modifications for the sound system would compromise freedom with the car that I enjoy now. There seems to be no perfect world...oh what a surprise.

I have taken a look at this area, and IIRC these are the "approximate" dimensions.
                            18" wide at the top
                            12" wide at the bottom
                            17" tall.
4" Avg depth top to bottom (flush)

That works out to be less than 0.5 Cu ft using 1/2 MDF.

Obviously this can get bigger, by using FG for the backing and utilizing the cavity in the back side and bottom, but some MDF needs to be used to create a frame. The top and door side have to be flush (straight in) in order to insert the enclosure and be able to remove it in order to get to the seat belt for repair, etc.

In order to get to .75 cu ft, the depth needs to be 7". My best guesstimate using mostly FG, using all space provided (and still be able to remove it) and having it stick out 5" - 6", is 1 cu ft.

I think this is a great location for some subs, and if done right can look the part too.
