    Stereo Progress

I thought I would start a thread with some of the progress I have made so far. It is taking me a while because I just have too much other stuff going on for this to be a priority.

I have already posted these pics in another thread here, but here they are again, in my thread.

So that is the start of the fiberglassing into the rear side panels, as well as the beginning of the modified side panel.

Next up is some wiring runs. I ran a bunch of extra wires in case I wanted to do some lighting or temp or voltage gauges etc.

Some pics of some damping in the rear seat area.

Mock up of steel amp rack.

And the fiberglassing of the sub enclosures.

Are you planning on running the boxes sealed? That looks to be 1/4" or so, I expect you will be running some bracing inside those boxes?

I am pretty sure I am doing two tens sealed. I don't think any bracing will be necessary. They are a bit thicker than 1/4", Maybe I will put the callipers on them today. There is 11 layers of 1.5 ounce matt in their with zero bubbles. I can jump up and down on them (I am 220 lb.) and they don't flex at all.

So you used no chop at all, just mat? They look terrific...but I would still do a couple of braces 'glassed in place. You can do just a couple of strips of MDF and a wad of chopped mat to secure them. You want to brace near the woofer, like a 2" X 2" strip from the front panel to the back of the box.

Mat is chopped, cloth is weaved. All mat. Pretty much as good of a layup as you can get. I learned the technique at Mobile Solutions In Phoenix last summer.

I'll get some real measurements tomorrow for the exact thickness for you.

I can tell there is no weave...I guess my question should be more like "did you chop your matting before you used it?"

It is very pretty work, easily as good as mine...and I built my first 'glass box in 1984! I had zero guidance, it was a complete disaster. I really wish I weren't so allergic to it. I cover myself in baby powder of talc of some kind, (even corn starch) it helps a lot...but I am still miserable for days after any glass work.

It really does look gorgeous though. I just hope you like the sound when you are done. I am sure it will kick ass.

Any chance you have a 1200.1 XP series amp for sale? I have a 600.2 and 2 600.4's, Brian over at Exile can't seeem to find me one...but I do have the first prototypes of those amps, had them in my van.

BTW, keep meaning to ask, you planning on re-finishing any part of your amps? All 3 of mine are beat, I think I am going to do all satin with the aluminum bits polished. I did that once before on those amps ( I was the 2nd dealer in Oregon) and it was dead sexy. I do plan on swapping the LEDs to red and do the trunk in black and red. I am sick of blue LEDs.

                          Back to work!

We sold a ton of Exile when we had it. Unfortunately these are the only two amps I ever purchased. If I knew these were being discontinued I would have bought a couple of each. I really liked the neo components set too, but never bought them. My former installer has a limited edition Mike Lavallee painted 800.4 that looks amazing. If these amps stay in this car I will paint the aluminium body colour for sure. And probably swap to red LEDs as well.

As for the layup, I do it all at once in is few sheets as possible. Its a killer technique that lets you spend as little time as possible actually applying mat in a vehicle so I don't get a sore back!
