    So I pulled my cluster

To paint the needles red. I put it back in and now the tachometer doesn't work. I hit the top of the dash and it came back on for a few minutes, but now it doesn't move at all. AFAIK, I put all of the sensors in correctly. Each sensor only goes in one way, right?

Help me figure out what RPM I'm driving at.

Probably did a short on the cluster board.

How do I check for that?

Take the cluster apart and inspect the board. I did the same thing with the needles, but at the same time I removed the OBC. So IDK which of the two burn my cluster board. When I removed the board, there was a section burnt.

How'd you fix it? New cluster?

I'd check and see if the coding plug came loose.

Yup, check the coding plug first. Maybe you forgot to put it in or did not "seat" it in all the way.

Perhaps your SI batteries are dead and coincidentally died during your mods. They are well over 20 years old now.

Give me a PM if you need cluster repair/inspection. I've fixed many member's cluster issues.

When pulling the tach out you may have "cracked" a soder joint. Check all the joints for cracks with a magnifying glass. If one is found just touch it up with a sodering gun.

OP, you didn't actually remove the tach right? Usually you can just pull the front cover off and paint your needles without removing anything from the circuit boards.

The paint is sticking to needle resting point.

Edit: whoops, I was thinking speedo, not tach

I took off the see through plastic panel and painted the needles that way. I didn't remove anything but the entire cluster from the car and the speedo to change the odo gears.

I will check for cracked solder joints and the coding plug.

You're right about the resting point on the tach. I don't think that is the problem however...after I painted the needles the tach worked maybe 2 or 3 times. It stopped working once so I hit the dash and the tach worked again for about 30 seconds.

Just took out the coding plug and reinstalled it. Nothing changed...

It ended up being a stuck needle. I guess the paint didn't fully cure when I installed it.

I've pulled the cluster out about 4 times in the past 2 days. It's very quick after doing it a few times!
