That's how later cars get radio reception.

my mom's old passat w8 had an antenna integrated in the rear window. i imagine it was via the defroster.

The issue is that there is only 1 grid, and of you were to try to connect it and the radio at the same time, you would likely smoke your deck.

You could easily use a couple of relays and have them toggle when you used the defroster.

Would it be possible to disconnect the defrost and just use the grid for an antenna? I an in Florida. No need for defrost.

absolutely. Should take an hour to do the whole damn install if that is how you plan it. In fact, you could do the whole job behind the radio.

And offer insight into " behind the radio" connections. A lot of us would love to delete our antenna. Just one less motor to fix or replace. Thank you sir.

I am super busy at work, but if I have time, maybe I will try it out using relays and make a post.

The rear defrost grid should work perfectly. I have heard that most antenna's designed into the front or rear wind screen have only one wire that travels the perimeter of the glass. The E30 rear defrost has several wires. That may give a much better signal strength.

Yeah, it's been done before. Check with Silence, he did it on his matte 318
