I dont think you'll notice a difference. With the 3/4", the walls of the box pretty much won't flex at all. The 1/2" might have a little give in it but honestly I'm not sure. I would bet almost anything that you won't notice a difference in 1/2" to 3/4". Doubling up the baffle (mounting surface) would be a good idea though just to make sure that the sub's mounting screws hold into the wood well.

really? i went there yesterday and it looked a little to thick...any particular specs i should be going by?? what do you use as an adhesive btw?

im the process of making a baffle and i want to be 100% sure with every material i use.

What do you mean by baffle?

I used whatever the had, thickness didn't matter much. I use 3M Spray Adhesive along with staples to secure it down.

What is that for? Are you doing a free air sub?

If the front wave is totally seperated from the rear wave its not free air ;) Its infinite baffle. Baffle = mounting surface of the subwoofer.

Will, you might be able to help me out on this. I am trying to decide if I should point my sub firing forward or backwards? I doubt it makes a lot of difference though. I am either going to make a circular cutout in my false wall and have the face of the sub poke out that way, firing backwards, or just mount the amp or the false wall to the back of the box and fire it inwards.

I've always fired rearward. Problem with that is rattles. Firing forward like Jordan did and isolating the sub from the trunk keeps rattles to a minimum which is a definite plus. Personally I dont think it matters, just whatever is best for your specific install. If you have an armrest and the ski hole cut out I think firing forward would be very cool. When firing rearwards I am always afraid to put ANYTHING in my trunk unless I have a grill on the sub which IMO looks bad. Its all up to you though, just whatever you think would look best and be easiest to work with. Another thing about firing rear with the false wall... if you leave about 1.5" in front of the sub open, you can cut a hole in the false wall and cover the whole wall with grill cloth instead of carpet. That will keep the sub's sound waves traveling as if there wasnt a wall there BUT the sub will be protected and unseen from anyone looking in the trunk.

That's a good idea about the grill clothe. I am worried about damaging the sub if its exposed as well.

I have the ski hole punched out but don't have the arm rest rear seat. I might center the box and mount the amp to the back of the box, which would be easier than having to build a whole rack for the amp.

3/4 vs. less: I've heard somewhere that 1" of box flex is the equivalent to losing 3" in sub excursion, or something like that.

My next box will definately have a double 3/4" baffle, and hopefully 1" MDF for the other sides.

And my single 10 is going to produce 1" of box flex?

Naw lol Just use 1/2". Who cares ;) I don't think it will be noticable at all. Besides... as long as it blends well with the rest of the system, do you care how loud it is?

                            Shrug, probably not... maybe 1/4"...

My friend insisted that we use 3/4 particle board, rather than MDF because we were putting in some JL 12w0's, and he said there is no way in hell the box will flex enough to make a noticable difference.

1 whole day later and we had 3" of flex, and I refused to build another box for free.

I guess it's just because I'm a hardcore motherf*cker when it comes to sounds, but I go all out on my boxes.

Particle Board is t3h suck. MDF for t3h win. And yes TJ, there is a competition going on and MDF won ;)
