testing in my garage today temperature about 80-85 degrees.

resistance at temp sensor plug is 1.495 k ohms on the brown\purple wire. when i tried the ground the plug test, the gauge shot to red.

You think the brown/purple wire has a short somewhere?

just replaced the wire running from the sensor plug to the cluster. from the plug itself all the way up to the blue C1 cluster plug.
OHM resistance with this new wire is about 200 ohms

this made no difference in how the cluster reacts. The temp guage will slightly move when i start the car. just barely 'click' on. but wont budge upward past the blue indicator on the gauge. after the car heats up, when i click the key on and off, it kinda ticks up and down. But still doesnt work properly.

the needle still pegs red when i ground the plug and turn the key over. the temp sendor is brand new.

this makes no sense to me. :headbang: maybe i didnt use the right kind of replacement wire with the 'perfect resistance'

i would think if the resistance was too low is would read high... i dont know anymore.. this is waffles annoying

why in the hell does the brown sensor have 1 male prong going to a brown plug with 2 females/2 wires? (1 ground and 1 to cluster)

Your problem is either vehicle wiring related or cluster related. I suggest you put the OEM wire back into place. You measured the resistance before and got a little over 1000 ohms which sounds right, with the new wire you installed, 200 ohms does not sound right.

You should verify 1000 ohms at the cluster plug. Once you verify that, it is safe to assume your cluster is to blame.

Another thing to try is to make sure the threads on the temp sender are not corroded or oxidized. Remove the sensor and clean the threads on the thermostat housing.

Also, you did verify your engine to chassis ground cable is in good condition right? You can measure the resistance across that cable and it should be near zero ohms.

i had a lightbulb go off while i was in the shower and this came to mind. ill look at this tonight. i replaced the original wiring. I bet this is the fix... really i have tried everything else.

thanks for all your help greg.

Well, I took a wire mesh to the thermostat housing threads and even tried taking a small flat head screwdriver to the threads too. No change. The sender is brand new.

A while back I took a wire mesh to every ground i could find on the car, including the main engine ground. I havnt tested the resistance of the engine ground yet though. maybe somehow that is the problem. It looked fine, and is clean now.

I tried 2 different clusters then got 1 of them fixed by you. I am just flat out confused by all this. This is such a strait forward system, it should not be this complicated

this is what im reffering to when i say it clicks on. This is after the engine is at normal operating temperature. about 190 degrees.

Just wanted to revive this thread as I noticed that my temp gauge is unusually low. I'm suspecting that my thermostat is about to go or is due for replacement because the temp stays at 1/4 instead of just before 1/2. I had the oil changed yesterday, and I'm pretty sure we didn't touch anything else so I was surprised to see that it was just at 1/4. In the morning it would have a hard time going up to temp. Sometimes, when sitting in traffic, its around normal close to 1/2 but when I start running, it goes down fast to 1/4.

              Replace thermostat?
