Hi R3V!
We are back from Bimmerfest after a 2800 mile roadtrip (look for the story shortly) and three big installs. The last of these three was the first install of our bigger trunk mount crossover in a 'vert. Let me tell you, when we first heard the full "E34 midbass in an E30" in fullrange, it was absolutely incredible.
We listened to all sorts of stuff without the sub (Sublime even!) and this is miles ahead of any aftermarket kit that fits the stock location.
However, while on the road trip I got to catch up to ClavinZero and listen to his car pretty extensively, both with and without the subwoofer. He is using a Dayton midbass driver that I recommended him. Had had Infinity "Perfects" in his car when I first heard it, they were horrible. Even in full racnge, no crossover at all, we had just about no response below 200Hz. You could see the woofer flapping, but zero output. I recommended he put the stock Premium back in and his midbass improved about 1000X.
He swapped to the Dayton Neodymium midbass: http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-...4-ohm--290-216
This speaker is so far the only thing I can recommend in place of the E34 midbass. Having heard their sound in an E30, I can say they were exceptionally clear and quick. My only concern is they are not quite as efficient as the E34 midbass, so they may be a little "thinner", and I would not recommend using them without a subwoofer at all.
I think you guys are going to be thrilled with the performance either way, be it E34 or the Dayton. I feel exactly the same about the Dayton tweeter, it is as close as I can find to perfect.
So, all that is good. You can use either Dayton or OE drivers (do OE is there is a fitment concern) and this will do exactly as promised: great sound and a perfect fit.
Oh yeah, PartsExpress has a sale on right now too, ends on the 28th.
Here is the updated list. All of you will get a PM shortly with payment instructions. We would like to order tomorrow morning, and prompt payment will make the build go much faster. I know you guys are wanting better sound, we will do our best to have these out by the end of next week!

2. Rmlr (1 pair)
3. FL318is

Thank you for the info on the Daytons. I may go that route and get the Dayton Mids/tweets and your crossovers, then with the addition of the 'vert box that I have i should be just about set.
Now if only I had somenthing to install in the rear of the 'vert in the side panels...

Anything especially worthwhile? Amp or speaker wiring? If nothing else I just add (6) Metra 72-8104 and resell them through subaruaudio.net

Luke-
Any add-on items on Parts Express that total about $30 that are a good deal? Wiring kits, wiring, etc.?
I may have to re-wire the e30 as I don't know what factory wiring is intact and what was messed with by a previous owner.
