My early 318i has had numerous clusters in it throughout the four years i've had it and all have the same issues. The speedometer doesn't work (common from what i've read) and the tach will read slow (as in i'm going 3500rpms and it says i'm at 2k).
Now i'm starting to suspect that its a wiring issue to the cluster not the cluster itself since all the clusters i put in it exhibit the same symptoms. The reason for my post is that i'm trying to figure out what the testing procedures are for ensuring the tach and speedo are both getting the proper signal. All the guides i can find are for motronic, and my car is L jet if i remember correctly.
Can anybody clarify if they are the same as other cars? Specifically does the tach signal come from the ECU still or is it coming from the distributor or coil on this car?
