imho the two towards the back of the door are overkill but ok (I really like the fit)
The panel in front is way overboard plus I think the stock sail panel arrangement of the tweeter is as close to perfect placement as possible so moving them (and I assume a mid) to the covered area in front of the armrest is not ideal.
I hope you are planning on covering the drivers. They will get ruined in quick order as they are.
There are at least 5 driverss in there. 4 is an overkill, that's why you get a sub and would easily pump everything below 70hz, instead stressing the F out of those. Get a solid performing woofer, adequate midrange and some nice tweeter.
Atleast they are mids and not multiple sets of components with tweeters everywhere screwing up soundstage/instrument placement etc. Now he just needs a single 10 or 12 right in the dash or passenger footwell area, ultimate front stage presence lol
Eurospeed - I proposed this question to the guy that setup my system and in short (said a bunch of stuff I have no idea about) glass acts as a great acoustic transmitter; i.e. it reflects sounds perfectly and the angle of the rear glass as I measured it would put the sound waves damn near at ear level in the front. Also keep in mind in 1980ish when these cars were designed, what we knew about sound and SQ in general was a lot less than these days. Now you can buy a $10,000 Bang & Ofulson sound system in a new Audi S6 or S8 that is completely dolby certified and is absolutely incredible.
As to the speakers on the door, that has always baffled me as well. In my 968, I have the premium 10-speaker sound system. Factory it comes with 3" door speakers at the top, then a 4" and tweeter at the bottom of the door. Literally like at the base of the door. There are 4 more speakers in the back of the car, 5.25" and a tweeter. All this is factory double amped. Always seemed to me that the system could be better executed but I have no complaints. Stock its as good or better than I like with the exception that there is NO bass.
