www.audionmore.com has some good prices on MB Quart

www.carmedia1.com has good prices on everything, including a/d/s/

Regarding the titanium tweeters of the MB Quarts, it really comes down to your preference. If you listen to a lot of hard rock, techno, hip hop, then you might prefer the titanium. They're much much brighter than the silk. However, my preference is the silk or soft dome because they're much softer and smoother.

Yeah, you might want to go to some car audio shops and listen to the speakers. You might have a hard time finding an a/d/s/ dealer, and they are quite selective with who they allow to sell their products. There are only one or two dealers in Oregon.

I think an Alpine 9833 and some type-r components up front wouldn't be too bad.

My friend had a new pioneer premier deck with the type-r's running off of it and it didn't sound too bad. The alpine's amp is a bit stronger though, should be better.
Or you can just run it off an amp, if you don't want to go all out then this is fine (at least for me).

i learned one thing about cars, when buying something you always go all out or you won't be happy and you'll spend the money again.

next question, is it worth the extra money to go with a 6.5" or just sitck with five and a quarter?

I'd go with the 6.5" if you can, you'll get better bass response. I know there are some 6.5" that will fit in the front stock locations, but I'm not sure which ones will. My MB Quarts wont fit in the front or the rear.

did you say that the mb quarts were too harsh? and you didn't like them, yet you have them in your car.

looks like 6.5 components it is. Now i just need to go listen to them. We'll talk amps later. When you mount the 6.5's you have to cut the kick panel, but can you still use the stock mounting points or do you have to drill into the metal, i never really snooped around behind the kick panel.

Because of the music you listen to, I think the MBs would fit you very well. The titanium tweeters of the MBs are very bright, a bit too much for my taste. I only have some MB 6.5" midbass drivers (no tweeters).

To fit some MB Quart 6.5" in the stock locations, you'll either have to make the hole a little bit bigger or you'll have to use spacers around the screws.

So what you are saying is that components are the best way to go? Would an amp make the components more effective? What kind of bass will you see out of components? DrMcDave im in the same boat as you w. the electro music, and not being satisfied with stock bmw units.

If you're going to spend the extra money to get components, you'll definitely want an amp for them. You'll notice a world of difference. A 6.5" driver can put out more bass than you would think.

thats what i was thinking about the 6.5's. I wouldnt ever really consider getting a sub, i think they are just way to much for what i want. Too overpowering. As long as the bass coming out of components is better than whats stock, im golden.

You might have to mod the stock locations a bit to fit a 6.5" though.

Just get whatever you can afford. The Musicomp crossovers are really nice if you splurge for a set with those.

i swear by alpine type R components. but thats just me, they are the best speakers for your money. ive never heard MB qarts and i dont think i want to (because then i will want them  ). anyway, ive heard lots of setups in the E30 and i personally think that a 10" sub with reasonable power and a top-notch ported box is the way to go if you listen to a veriety of music. i have alpine type R 10" with alpine amp, i love it cause its not to much, but if im in the mood i can make you hear me two blocks away.
with that said, id go with a 10" after what you said. perfect size.
