The Exile XTEC 10's absolutely rock in .8, ported. The bitch is figuring out a way to make a 4" port 27" long inside that side panel....habitrail, anyone?

LOL! That chick was my Ex, and yes, we are still friends. And yes she did do the installation, I helped her along the way though. But I'd say she did a large portion of it. I think everyone didn't believe it at first until they came by the shop and saw her working or asked her specific questions on wiring.

As for my car, it has changed since the last time it was in Car Audio mag....

yea, I still have all of the articles, but it is all buried in the storage room. I gotta go through them one day and dig them out to post. I can't beleve that you still remember that system!

The side panel boxes were in fibreglass boxes and mounted with aluminum angles to the inside metal trim. Back in the day which was about 12 years ago, sub boxes were common to be 2 cuft per sub. Nothing like the .5 cuft now a days. So back to the old question, where do you put a pair of eights, I would change them to a pair of tens and mount them in the side panels. What you need to do is rebuild the side panels, they are pretty flat. Build a pair of fibreglass boxes to mount into the panels and mount the subs. I guess the only real issue is the actual thickness of the subs, There are several subwoofers out there that are shallow.

One of them that I can think of is the Pioneer Subs: TS-SW1041D 3" mounting depth and only needs .35 cuft.


The rear panel TADs were mounted on the rear panel sealed with layers of dynamat (One of my old sponsers), then fibreglass. So essentially the rear trunk was totally isolated from the cabin. I added the Richard Clark AP membranes which were specifically made for the TADS.

The subs are rear firing (magnets face the interior) and they fit in the rear seat. The rear seat has a spot where the foam is hollowed out for the magnets but unless you push really hard, you can't notice it that much. I used zero trunk space for the actual sub box as it is the trunk. I'll dig up some pics which I will scan and post.

Definitely get those pics up. Do you still have the photos of when your car was in Car Stereo Review?

Then I changed to a pair of commercial grade Pioneer TAD 15's with aperodic membranes which I still have in the car today. The sound is impressive! The subs are rear firing (magnets face the interior) and they fit in the rear seat. The rear seat has a spot where the foam is hollowed out for the magnets but unless you push really hard, you can't notice it that much. I used zero trunk space for the actual sub box as it is the trunk. I'll dig up some pics which I will scan and post.

I will take it tonight and get it posted. It is basically a MDF box made 10 years ago with 2 ports in top to rear deck. Can you post some pics of the 12" box and prices?

That small of an XMAX might cause some bottoming. What amp do you plan on running? Do you have an "Infrasonic Filter" (AKA subsonic filter)?

The Qts is somewhat of a concern. Higher than .5 is ideal, like .7 is awesome, since there is nothing to help the woofer resonate, a higher Q will help bring the low end up...thus the need for a higher XMAX.

Finding a woofer that works well in an infinite baffle setup is kind of rare, since it is so out of fashion these days. Look for a spec called Qtc (AKA Qts)...you want over .5, and a fairly high Fs, about 40 would be great. XMAX over 5mm would be nice too.

I found some with a Qts of .44 and an Fs of 43. , Xmax=3.5 mm. What do you think? Mounting depth 3.35"

Even Series 1 Fosgates worked well in an infinite baffle install.

I had bad luck with the JL ib woofers awhile back, they would bottom out really bad, I put in some cheap no name chrome ones I had laying around and they worked great. If you use the JL make sure you have the correct power for them or they might not work to your likeing.
