    Fitting Rear Speakers

Installing newer, better speakers in your convertible is great but there is a lot of conflicting information because of the rear side panels. These panels have a strange depth fitment and only certain woofers will actually fit.

This happened to me first hand recently when I bought a set of woofers from Crutchfield that were supposed to fit. When they were installed, the tweeter in the cone went out to far and the speaker grills/panels can't fit.

Here are some examples of this misinformation on Amazon and Crutchfield. In both cases the vehicle is set to my 87 convertible.

Take a look at the dimensions of the Pioneer speakers. That depth will not fit in the rear panel.

Let's get a collection of speakers that DO and DO NOT fit the rear panels. If you made something fit, how did you do it?

You need a shallow mid with a smaller magnet. It's fine for fill especially if you have a sub. Here's what I used and it barely fits but does fit without the tweeter protruding thru the plastic panel. I've been very happy with them.

I'm currently running the Pioneer TS-D1302R 5.25 In. 2-Way Speakers in the back of my '92 vert. This is in conjunction with the factory head unit and since the car has the premium sound package I assume there's a factory amp? Sound is okay I would guess that it's on par with the way the car sounded from the factory. A guy with German Audio Specialties was recommending this model speaker for verts (at least he was a couple of years ago he may be recommending something else now).

Fitment wasn't easy but it can be done. I actually had to put the speakers top two mounting tabs behind the car's fixed mounting points and the lower two tabs in front of the mount points. There are a couple of pics on this thread that show what i'm talking about http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/show...-D1320C&page=3

After installation I found the speakers were rattling against the factory grille cover. To remedy this I used a dremel to trim off the circular plastic "lip" on the back side of the factory speaker cover.

I have Pioneer TS-A1357 in the rear of my convertible. They fit without complications.
