What the Heck is This?

I have a 1992 318ic, and not sure what this steel eyelet and cable are (see photo below). The eyelet attaches to a small protrusion on the left arm holding up the trunk lid, and appears to be factory installed. I just noticed that the clip that should be holding it on is missing, and want to order the correct part, but this assembly doesn't appear on any schematics. For the time being, I'm just holding it in with a knot of thick monafilament line, so just curious if anyone knows the part # for the correct clip, and what this cable is for. Many thanks!

Thanks, Jason. I saw that too, but can't really discern what the cable actually does. More importantly, none of the diagrams show the other end of the cable (where it terminates in the trunk), so I can't see the clip that secures it.

I believe this cable keeps you from opening the trunk lid when the convertible compartment cover is open.

Should be the same clip as used on the deck lid shocks.

The other end of the cable should be attached to the left trunk hinge.
