    Decoding BMW VINs

Charts outlining what all your car's VIN number consists of:

"See, we're adding a little something to this month's sales contest. As you all know, first prize is a Cadillac Eldorado. Anyone wanna see second prize? Second prize is a set of steak knives. Third prize is you're fired."

I also have a number, so I can't tell if it was made in Munich or whatever. But thanks for the info, now I can be proud to have a German BMW, not a US one :P (yay elitism).

there was somebody a while back who did an even more detailed VIN search, he could break it down to the very day your car was produced and it's options. My car's birthday is actually tomorrow, 10-19-1990.

There is a lot more information in a VIN than is listed in that chart.

For example, the third digit. A = regular BMW, S = BMW M.

The fourth through seventh digits are also the production code which specify auto/manual, convertible/hardtop, US/ROW, etc. You can see that on realOEM when you look up a serial number.
