    M50TU/M52 + Megasquirt, Vanos question.

Hi guys, is anyone here running a M50TU or M52, with a megasquirt and is using the intake vanos?

AFAIK this engines use the VANOS as an on-off, not a variable position as in later engines.
Ive been told i could use the nitrous output to control de VANOS, so if you did it this way, i would love to hear your experience and any usefull input.

I will be using the M52 without the cam position sensor, just the crank position. for ignition since i wont have the cam position sensor, i will be going for a wasted spark setup using the original COPs, with 6 BIP373.

I would like to keep the VANOS if possible, as a last resource i know i can delete it.

So any advice is appreciated, cheers.

    EDIT:
I missed to mention that im running a MS1v3.0 with extra code. I have a 4 outputs used for boost controller, sequential shift lights and the nitrous out for the VANOS.
With the original setup i believe, VANOS is triggered on at 2500rpm and then off again at 5500rpm. Can someone confirm this?

You're on the right track. MS will need to sink a few hundred milliamps of current, the solenoid doesn't draw much power.

VANOS activation (below 5200) is based on load. You could generalize and trigger at greater than 15% throttle position. I don't know what parameters MS lets you use for triggers. You might be able to use load directly.

Also avoid it when the engine is cold.

    VANOS is worth keeping.

ive seen screenshots of the nitrous output being triggered by rpms, and manifold pressure. i THINK, i saw a setting based on throttle position.

would you recomend just an off-on setup, or a off-on-off setup as the original works (supposedly).

so regarding the activation of the solenoid, you advise i run it straight from the MS output? i was thinking maybe using a transistor there, but i dont know THAT much of electronics :P

      thanks for your advice :)

EDIT: this will be a turbo engine, not a NA.

I don't know the MS specs to know what load it can support. Is the output already run through a transistor on the board? I would use a MOSFET instead of a transistor.

Off-on-off is fine, mainly to keep the cam from advancing at really low rpms where you tend to have very low loads anyway.
