    318is side exhaust fab idea

This is merely a wild whim that I am entertaining, and I am just looking for experienced feedback.

I did some research and it seems that a magnaflow 2.25" dia inlet/outlet from summitracing.com and a resonator does the trick for a throaty non-ricer sound.

(btw, any suggestions on resonators? How about this one? http://www.summitracing.com/parts/JE...2S-5/?rtype=10)

Anyway my weird and possibly totally stupid idea is this: replace stock cat/resonator w/ magnaflow muffler and a resonator, and simply turn the pipe to the side and exit before the rear wheels, as shown in this highly technical schematic:

The reason the side pipe thing even entered me brain is because I have been doing alot of rear subframe/diff/axle shenanigans lately and the catback bit is a real PITA to uninstall/reinstall all the time, and it weighs a ton. This way I could save like 50-75 lbs or so. Would be significant on a car that is at 2300 lbs currently.

Are you planning on cutting and welding in a new tunnel for the side exhaust, or are you just going to have it hang low and poke out underneath the rocker panel?

I put a side exit exhaust on my M3, and had a proper tunnel fabricated for it and made it exit though the sideskirt. You can see it in my sig pic.

Most side exhausts I've seen on this forum have been ghetto rigged with no tunnel for the exhaust. It ends up looking like a piece of shit that somebody pieced together with a bunch of leftover parts, hose clamps, and coathangers.
    Don't do it this way.

Also, don't expect the exhaust to be anything near quiet.

^^^ See, THAT'S the kind of experienced feedback that I was looking for!!!! ;) Thanks Erik, I was actually wondering what it would look like with no "place" for the exit piping. After looking at a side picture of my car, it would indeed seem an awkward location for an exhaust pipe.

        yours looks awesome btw.

loud is ok, as long as it is a good loud...

I have read though on here and M42club that this setup isn't too loud if you have both a muffler and a resonator....

            Orrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Basically unbolted the current catback system and bolted on a 90 after the cat, ran a pip out to the side then slash cut a 90 as a tip. your gonna have a hard time fitting all that shit under there.

dude, i dunno man. I was envisioning an exit that was straight with a chrome straight tip, and a whole heck of alot bigger pipe. Is that the stock pipe size there? It looks tiny.

However, I am in love with your wheels. Trade for 15x7 Kosei K1s?

Sorry Dude, but using metal strapping from the hardware store to hold up the exhaust pipe is only one step up from using a coathanger.

Here's another side exhaust setup. (not my car):

In my opinion, unless you have the tip exit through the sideskirt, it looks half-assed.

lol the only way i could see this working is if you straight piped it. No cat no res no nothing.

Theres no way its gonna fit otherwise.

erick325i.... I am in love with your car.

haha.... I was thinking side exhaust in place of my rust.... but It would be too much work. But a metal plate right before my fender might look alright. Not going for it though. Only if I had it done right.
