How to patch an exhaust leak

I just found an exhaust leak after my last flange that's about the size of a dime. Is there any way to fill it or do I have to get a new exhaust.? Would welding a piece of metal over it work? The reason I don't want to put on a new one is because oem is expensive (I'm a poor college student) and there are no real gains to get from aftermarket except for sound. Any thoughts?

they sell patch kits but when I was having my exhaust done the guys at the shop told me they are worthless and won't last more than a few days. you might be able to have it welded but how long until somewhere else rutsts through?

nah, the sound of engine flatulance isn't very appealing to me. it is louder, not by much, but it doesn't sound like anything sporty. i just hate the way it sounds coming of of the side of my car when i drive next to buildings.

so welding is possibly a temporary fix but i'll probably have to end up buying a new exhaust?

Any exhaust shop should be able to patch it up fairly easily. That is, given the surrounding area isn't too rusted.
