Old vs. new OEM exhaust sound?

My stock OEM exhaust is original on my car, and its showing its age. There are a couple rust holes right where the down pipes enter the muffler. The tone is gotten a bit louder and deeper since the holes.

I have a 6 month old OEM exhaust from my parts car that I am considering putting on my car. What kind of sound change am I going to be looking at with the new OEM exhaust? I think Jay has a new stocker, maybe he knows.

I am also considering about cutting the tips off the E36 M3 exhaust and putting them on the E30 can.

You're probably going to be dropping a good amount of volume and throatiness.

Yea, my rotted old muffler sounded a bit better than the new Ansa OEM one I got put on.

It sounded better, or just different?

I replaced everything cat-back with brand new OEM parts 2 years ago, the stock stuff was 13 years old and rotting at that point (the exahust was burbly and mean, sounded nice but looked ugly) The car got a lot quieter under 4000rpm, and the upper range remained pretty damn loud. I also gained a significant amount of torque and throttle response, those leaks downstream seem to really affect performance. It seriously wasn't just in my head, I was suddenly able to break loose in 1st (crappy Bridgestone RE930s back then).

I kinda like the deeper tone with the holes but honestly it sounds like a muffler with holes, kinda shitty. I was driving next to a nice clean iX that had a Triflow last night, it was so much nicer although unfortunately I was driving my girlfriend Eclipse at the time.

My cat/downpipes are decent shape. There are no holes or anything, they are just scraped and scratched from my car being so low. I think I am going to put the new cat back on my car next time I am at home, and see if I can get those tips welded on.

So I wasn't imagining things? I also noticed that the car seemed to have more torque with the new muffler. I attributed it to there being more backpressure at low RPM's with the new muffler, correct me if I'm wrong.

Backpressure is never good (common myth), it's velocity you want. And holes disrupt the smooth flow of gases, hence the better torque.

before I got my ansa, Mine was rotted off at the back of the resonator, he had a clothes hanger holding that section up and sounded like a ricer(which the old owner liked), new ansa sounds much better quiter when you want it to be but deep and mean after ~2700rpm no rasp.

We'll just have to see how my new OEM I exhaust w/ removed cat/resonator,and possibly larger piping(not much), is gonna sound/perform come spring, according to Randy, some nice gains are to be seen.

                        TJ:
Went through the same thing. My old ass original exhaust with rust and holes sounded kinda bad ass, but I put on a much fresher muffer (had almost 1/2 the mileage) and the car got much quieter. Not quiet in a bad way, but I grew to like it... It just sounded better.

Use OEM piping, and keep just the muffler. You'll gain something.

Where can i find a new oem ansa system? i have stock exhaust as well, and even though its in good shape for damn near 19 years old i know it could sound better. Also, how much could i expect to pay for a whole new oem system? mystykal: your car sounds sick! im guessing just an open element air filter?

I think either BMP or BavAuto sells Ansa. The dealer or most parts shops can get OEM exhausts, they are something around $200. I'd probably buy an OEM over an Ansa.

I am at home right now but my car is still at school or I would install my new OEM exhaust this weekend. Sucks, I'll probably have to wait till Christmas because I am going to Sebring for Thanksgiving.
