why build an M20? maybe you should think about that comment a little/alot more. The factory headers actually flow pretty well, not great but not horrible either, and I noticed no one has brought up MSDS headers which I believe are mid length(sold through pelican). I know Jordan has more than enough reason why to build an M20.
Everything I have ever read states smaller, long tube headers are best for street driven cars as they help most w/ low/midrange torque/power.
Short tubes are best for upper mid/hi end. This doesn't seem to agree w/ everything stated on this thread......but I am pretty sure what I stated is correct. There is ALOT of header science on the net.
well, i was given the choice of stock manifold, IE shorties and the stahl $600 headers .... i went with the IE shorty's..
--- u don't need a dyno or any opinions to see that this would obviously improve the motor's ability to breathe. its also lighter than a stock manifold and at around $250.. how can u go wrong ?
--stock manifold is certainly a more congested design.
as for a $600 set of headers on an M20..? maybe on some kinda stroker motor w 12:1 compression and a nasty cam... but why build a m20.. hello? - better off to find an yourself an M3 motor --
...lol.. why build a m20--?? - i'd luv to .. lets hear it for the underdog m20b25 -- but we all know its not practical--
--for all the money involved in building a competitive n/a m20- what are u gonna get maybe 250 whp .. ? .. congrats u've jus spent at least $5000.. stroker crank , headwork, cam, header , rods, pistons -- whew-- oh there goes that little crappy civic with a CRVtec motor -- on a roadcourse to boot
-- some of the sexiest e-30's don't even have a m20--- right?--
-- lets face it if we could all afford a $600 header brand new, we would all have e36 m3's or better anyway-- i wouldn't waste much effort on a m20.. and least not a n/a verion ..

Dave Adams spent nearly $9,000 on his 3.0L M20 stroker and put down around 213 to the rear wheels.
I thought it was 213 at the crank?
I've been thinking about Dave's motor recently, and I think the reason he spent so much and got so little out of it is because he basically bought all the most expensive parts he could find, slapped it together, and was dissapointed by the results. things like the 1mm oversized valves cost a LOT and probably don't add up to much in the end (headwork makes more of a difference IMO). Also keep in mind that he ran the motor with a stock ECU and a stock chip, definetly not optimum for all the mods that went into it.
also, not everyone's goal is to beat Honda Civics or be the fastest drag racer. Maybe for you guys, an M20 is not worth it, but that doesn't mean others can't get enjoyment out of it.

i agree-- i accept the m20 for what it is-- a smooth i-6 that is simple to work on and is bulletproof enuff for weekend track events- BTW--mine will never have a header from Stahl bought @ MSRP.
