    Are mufflers really THAT necessary?

My muffler popped the other day. It made quite a noise when it happened. Anyway, aside from being annoyingly loud, are there any real issues to driving around like this?

Shouldn't be a problem...mechanically. Depending on the volume and where you live, a police officer may decide to enforce the noise ordinances that most cities and counties have. If I were you I'd avoid revving her up until you get it fixed. You don't want to be pegged as one of those guys :)

It's probably less than ideal to vent the hot exhaust upwards like that. Otherwise looks OK. Might use some muffler repair tape after you remove the obstruction that caused it to pop open

That will be a lot of heat directed up at the trunk floor. Exhaust gets pretty hot.

The resonance inside the car may mess with your inner ear too. I drove a car home about 40 miles when I bought it, fortunately it wasn't raining, I had to roll down the windows after the first 2 minutes.
