What exactly are the theoretical CARB qualifiers for a successful modification? No increase in emissions (PPM, not total, or they'd never allow FI) of any kind at any time whatsoever? I'd imagine pulling that off with a turbo would push you toward thermal coatings to get the cat lit off quickly (probably why new OE systems have the cat bolted right to the turbo).

In fact, I'm rather surprised the e30 does as well as it does on emissions given that the cat is halfway under the car; most of the 80s cars I've seen have an air pump for the cat, and run the engine a bit rich to keep numbers in line, never mind EGR and other things we all love to not have on our cars.

Sweet. IF I ever move to cali, I'll roll around in my 2002 making people's eyes water and their sinuses burn.

In Maryland you can register the car historic if its 20 years or older. This means no smog or visual inspection. So turboing is not an issue now :finger:. However if you don't have a 20 year old car, you have to first find a crooked inspection station and pay them $50 more. Then for emissions when you go and fail, they keep your $14 but you don't have to pay again then you retest every couple months. As long as you retest within there time limit your golden.

i used to have a jacked up broken POS lebaron. thing had a blown HG.
took it to get smogged, knowing it wouldn't pass. guy hooks it up and starts to warm it up, blowing smoke all over and he says" i dont think this is gonna do it".

so i smile and say, "shit...well if it doesn't pass im not paying!".
after he had already done the work to hook it up and ect.

needless to say it "passed" and he got a tip. lol
