    who says modded engines pollute

i've been trying to get my 91 325i through AZ emissions testing and just barely failing heres my #'s
hydrcarbons (HC) in grams/mile 0.71 allowed 1.00 pass
carbon monoxide (CO) in grams/mile 3.73 allowed 12.00 pass
oxides of nitrogen (NOX) in grams/mile 2.67 allowed 2.50 fail
here's my mods: Dbillas itb's., shorty headers, cat back, schrick 288 cam, p&p head, splitsecond stand alone, cobra MAF conversion/k&n cone filter, supposedly it is also a 2.7 stroker motor, but i can't say 100% for sure. all this and i put out these #'s 4 tests much retuning and just barely failing the NOX (measured at cruse), so i go to check my cat and she is empty! it's the orginal too, but it was there 6 months ago! so i am going to put a pair of new cats on it and it should blow almost 0's then. just thought i'd share this though. BTW those #'s were with a half tank of 91 and a gallon of denatured alchohol. first test was almost the same #'s with all 91, but it blew a 2.71 on the NOX

In Calif., even if the car passed the sniff test with all these mods, the techs would laugh you out of the shop because the motor appears visually modified....especially that ITBs bit. It just sucks out here....can hardly do anything without running into issues with the folks at CARB.

Having said that, M50/S50 swap FTW. That's legal here.

I'm VERY interested to hear about the kind of performance you're getting!:firehop:

        (sorry for the thread-jack)

Back on topic, it's DEFINITELY more of a challenge to get a modified m20 to pass emissions, but its very doable.
This is your M20 on steroids:

that, your gun laws, traffic, high gas prices, housing prices, ect. keep me from moving to cali. although i do like to visit Sacto, i used to go for the bug-o-rama's there every year, it's cool in downtown? with all the museums on the great america river. it's weird we seem to be a cali clone state when it comes to emissions , but we care about what comes out of the tail pipe and not what it takes to get it there. the emissions is run by a private company contracted by the state. the people are MORONS! can't keep the car on the rollers with the LSD watch it skate around hope the don't jump it off. they miss gears and bog it down like the were 15 on a learners permit. with my jetta and it's quaiffe they would run it back and forth against the edges of the dyno roller and curb my tires...nice

and i am saying a properly tuned matched set up not miss matched parts, as far as the non polluting end of it

Run straight gas next time. Your running too lean with the alcohol which is giving you higher combustion temps and creating the nox. I got mine to pass with 274 cam port work, motronic 1.3 and 17.5# injectors. Straight 87 octane. My cat is also pretty much gone.

but the NOX reading was actually higher with the straight gas (2.71 VS. 2.67 with the alcohol)

w00t w00t! I successfully passed CA emissions with my M50. The guy testing couldn't tell it wasn't the stock motor, he even said he had two 325i's sitting at home. What a liar/dumbass.

still pretty close. New cat aught to take good care especially if you get 3 way convertors. My advice is unless your going to spend big bucks for a factory cat, put flanges on so you can remove it and reinstall it for testing purposes. Its been my experience that the cheaper convertors lose efficiency over time. We have a carbed ford truck with a 460 v8, heads headers, intake, cam, ignition and full exhaust. It was able to pass with very low readings with a good tune and two cats. Left them on and 2 years later tested again and failed miserably. Put new cats on and went through.

You setup sounds very nice. What kind of power?

Always a great feeling when the car passes emissions.
I just had my 318is inspected on Wednesday, and it passed with flying colors (S50 w/24# injectors, Euro HFM, Turner software). I'm freakin psyched. The guy did manage to stall it about 5 times and almost jump the car off the dyno everytime he started off.

Do you have some kind of performance chip? If so, replace it with the factory unit. A performance chip uses a more aggressive timing map, which will make your NOx shoot up.

i am going to put two "bullet type" cats side by side with prob a cross- over after the cats, since they are shortys they slip over and keep the factory flange in the back so i will just try to duplicate that end of it. i am also going to have him make me a "cat-less" section for regular driving with a couple of smooth bore glass packs or a similar type of muffler (i have to see what type of mufflers that GHL has. that should hepl to kill the "raspberries" from no cat and give it a lower rumble w/o killing the no cat gains. i did a similar set-up on my A-2 jetta with a euro down pipe (no provision for a cat) and a almost 4' long smoothbore glasspack with a TT cat back and a baffled DTM muffler. it sounded mean w/o sounding like a ricer.

i really don't know what kind of power since this is my first bmw (i was vw and porsche before) i bought the car with the mods done (although done VERY shitty!) fixed a ton of the idiots half-assed instalations and wireing, redid the brakes, installed reupholstered vw recaros and had the rear seat done to match. i think it is a little lacking in the low end punch (hard cornering in second) so i am looking at building a 84 x 86 or bigger stroke motor for it to get more low torque. i am going to wildly guess at (based on what the figures i have seen here) 180 ish wheel??? i would like to get a REALLY solid 200-200+ whp with the new motor.

Where are you going to get it done? You can go to a private emissions place where you can sort of "bribe" them. I know people who have done this, but I never have myself.

I went to the one right next to the DMV close to 59th Ave and Bell. Is it true if you have an 80's car that you have to get checked every year? For some reason the lady at the DMV said I would have to come a year after getting it done. I'd rather not go back to the same place, my M50 passed with flying colors, but just as you said the workers treat your car like shit.

Oh, you should go to one of the local AZBMW meets sometime, would like to see more E30s at the meets. Check azbmw.org for details.
