Not saying a stand alone is bad (I have installed/tuned many), but the stock computer does work and can be expanded upon. It's already installed/wired and has a perfect starter file already in it.

      s50 turbo trm

update- picked up the chip from jG and the car wouldent even start, this chip was for an obd1 configured s52 and i have an s50 so the shop and I both thought it would work, but i guess not, such a bummer i was hoping this would help me see if the tune was my issue so i guess its back to the drawing board.

Im going to get a fuel pressue guage just to check and see if it could be a fuel related issue,i do have a new pump and new injectors i also made sure all the injectors were firing, but i could have a faulty regulator? or the pump could be on its way out? its a 255lph with like 100 miles on it but who knows

Are you using an OBD 1 or 2 FPR?

So if i do make the switch to stand alone, what are most people running on? i know megasquirt is popular among m20 turbos but i see aem, haltech + others being used on m/s5x cars

The ECU doesn't care if it's an m50, s50, m52 or s52, they all run similar enough that the car should have started - as long as your chip matches the injector and MAF sizes that is. (m50 tune on s50/2 will run lean in the upper RPM's, though).

I'm extremely happy with my Vipec setup. They even make a plug and play configured V88 ecu for the M50 OBD1 harness.
I wouldn't recommend mega squirt. Yes it's technically a standalone ecu, but they are pretty unreliable. Especially once you start throwing timing at a boosted motor.

I recommend Vipec, Emtron, Haltech, or Motec.
I'm happy to put you in touch with my friend who did the calibration in my car.

My experience says otherwise. I have a client DD cars running MS (turbo, NA and ITB) and have been for quite some time with zero issues. Perhaps years ago there were some reliability problems with MS1, but lately things have changed (both in hardware and software).

Any modern stand alone is light years beyond what they were just a few years ago.

                    S50 turbo rough idle

I figured the s52 chip would run an s50, but i installed it in a 413,506 and installed it with or without the encryption board trm uses, it made no difference the car just wouldn't run with it.

I am going to keep trying to get this car running correctly i would hate to throw away the 1200 bucks i spent on the trm package, I may bring the car over to JG tecknik in a week or 2 once im completely out of options and see if they can find something i may have missed?

and if all else fails i will be switching to standalone

They just press burn on a $0.03 chip.
Tell them to trade in for a new one. You tried everything else.

I wish they were that cheap, they hover around $5 lately since no one is manufacturing them anymore, it has driven the prices up a bit, but yes it's about a 1min process to burn a chip.

                          S50 turbo rough idle

I did bring up getting another chip, but TRM is saying its not the chip over and over again, so im going to bring the car down to jg teknik in a week or 2 and have them look over the car and see if im missing anything

                              S50 trm issues

got the car back from the shop and I am still having the same issue, The only thing they found was an out of spec coolant temp sensor, that was replaced but im still having the same issue Im almost ready to give up on the TRM package and take a hit on 1500 bucks
