    icv factory settings

Hi all, I need help finding the factory setting for the Idle Air Control Valve on my 1985 318i.

I have restored my 318i's m10 back to its factory settings after buying it from an owner who had everything completely fucked. All but the L-shaped ICV. I can't find anything online or in manuals about how this valves external bolt is supposed to be positioned from factory. Obviously I could just fuck with it and see how it changes my idle, but Im curious as to how this car came from the factory. Any help would be appreciated.

Just in case any of you veterans have some insight for me, I am hoping that restoring the car to factory settings will get the engine running smoothly, but Im curious if some sensors may need to be tweaked past factory to account for modern fuels or things like that. Either way, im curious to see how it runs with everything stock. And please dont tell me to get rid of this engine, I think m10's are awesome and I dont have the money to convert to Motronic or standalone yet.

an icv is not adjustable. it works or it doesn't. it is set at manufacture.

Make sure absolutely zero vacuum leaks are detected. The L-Jet works great until you get a vacuum leak. They will rev high and/or hunt constantly with vacuum leaks. Check the manufacturing dates on the idle control module (next to the ECU) and the actual ICV. They were recall items. Not sure if there is a limitation for age on recalls. Good luck - lightweight cars with 100 HP are underrated!

Both styles of ICV are adjustable with a screw valve. The L shape (mine) with an external screw and the T shape with an internal screw. All manuals outline adjusting the ICV but do not specify where factory has those screws

Thanks Packrat, you've helped me a few times in the past, I always appreciate it. At the moment, since setting everything else to factory, the idle is extremely consistent with no hunting or hesitations. It just sits at 1600 which is not cool. Going to replace all my vacuum hoses though just in case. She's getting smoother every day though, such a fun engine!

never seen one with a screw valve installed. are you taking them apart to get at it ? i've had an m10 but never had issues with it. assumed it's the same with the m20 if they are motronic.

Idle control valves for the M10 are different than the late M20 valves. There may be some similarities between the M10 and 325e (not 1988 super eta) valves and modules, but I bet they are calibrated differently too.
