late e30 M20 coolant tank overflow tube

Can anyone tell me where it's supposed to be routed as designed? I've seen pics where it goes down into the engine bay and some pics where it goes vertically back towards the fuse box, along the harness and dips into the fender vis the hole on the drive's side of the engine bay.

1. It goes towards the fender.
2. It turns 90 degrees and goes towards the fuse box.
3. It dips into the vertical ø15 mm hole in the fender before the shock mount.

It should be pretty long, so it stays in the hole.
