    Camshaft seal seating depth

I am about to replace the camshaft seal in a 1991 M20 engine. The seal I removed was replaced in the past (based on pry marks on the seal retainer) and was flush with the front face. The camshaft has a wear ring at what would have been the fully seated location of the shaft seal. I estimate that it’s 1 to 3 thousandths deep. Advice on where to locate the new one?

That's probably why it was moved in the first place. You can get a Redi-sleeve (SKF CR99147), or if the seal is the kind with a spring, you can un-thread the spring, clip a few coils off and put it back in.

I usually press a bit deeper or less deep depending but I’m not sure it truly matters in this case as seal tolerance capability is usually much more than 3 thou
