    Engine identification help

Good afternoon all. I picked up a new project E30 (1989 325i Vert.) and the previous owner had this engine sitting awkwardly on taller than standard mounts. 885 head marked 2.5, single spring valves, cam marked “662.” Head bolts were hex head. Im just looking for someone to chime in who knows more about what I’m looking at. I’m thinking it’s an SETA but the oil pan is throwing me off. Is this out of a 5 series?

probably out of an e28 528es based on the oil pan, single valve springs on an 885 head, and those look like seta pistons. You can measure the stoke to verify an 81mm crank through (eta/seta) vs a 75mm stroke (m20b25).

if it is a seta, you might want to look into building a 2.7i engine:

Thank you both for the response! When the temperature drops to a tolerable level I’ll put up what I found for a stroke measurement. I’ll definitely look into a stroker, that sounds like something that would be fun!

I was in the ball park of 81. I did it kind of rushed and didn’t get it level over the bore. I pulled 83mm on my Neiko digital calipers.

thank you all for the help!

I attached a photo of the head with the head bolts installed for people’s future reference as well!
