Replaced valve cover gasket, on install unfortunately stripped a stud. Had to drive it back home 30 miles and take the cover off again a day later to remove the stud. I believe in both cases after putting the cover back on, the cover seemed to be off center. Did I botch the gasket install? No oil leaks after driving 50+ miles after second removal.
Valve cover off center after gasket install?

It’s pretty hard to mess it up as the studs act as locators so the valve cover can only float about 1mm or so fore and aft and left and right. The gaskets could be wrong but doesn’t seem to be the issue.
A couple of things to watch out for are the valve cover getting hung up on the rocker shaft locks. As the valve cover is designed to retain those and sometimes they are not seated properly
the torque spec is 10Nm NOT the 15Nm (9-11 lb-ft) google and others say. You also need to periodically retorque after heat cyclingLast edited by digger; 07-09-2026, 03:46 PM.89 E30 325is Lachs Silber - currently M20B31, M20B33 in the works, stroked to the hilt...
