    Question about 2.8L Stroker(ECU Programming)

Im going to stroker my M20 and im trying to plan it out. I so I have a question about the ECU and Programming I was talking to a engine rebuilding company and they said if I mess with the crank and cam to stroker it and bore it out I will have to reprogram the ecu and that could cost 1500 is that true?

it will run fine on the stock computer with a chip - but they are right, in a way. you need a tune to get the full potential out of your motor. That could mean a custom chip, a piggyback, or a full standalone computer.

I wouldn't spend $1500 on the stock motronic computer though, you could do a much better stand alone computer for about $1000 and get rid of the AFM among other possibilities (sequential injection, no more cap/rotor, etc).

I would reccomend, however, that you break the engine in on the stock computer, with the stock chip. it will be a "safe" tune so you can focus on engine break in, rather than trying to do that and learning how to build/wire/tune a whole engine management system at the same time.

Thank you for your input. I think I need to do more research. How reliable is this 2.8L set up.

The main reason for the stroker set-up is that I hope to turbo this car next winter.

as reliable as a stock motor, unless somebody screws up building it.
