    M20 stroker running issue

    See post #8

Just put my m20 stroker in the car. It is the eta bottom end and I top end.

I have not put any of the cooling system in yet, just because I want to know it runs before I put any coolant in it.

When I start the car it takes a bit to start, then when it does finally start, it will idle crappily for a few seconds and then stall.

I have already checked and switched the CPS and the pulse sensor wires. It has spark, It has fuel (although we have not checked to see how consistent it was) and it is happening with both my 173 ecu and 153 ecu.

Any ideas? I will plug in the sensors on the rad in the morning to see if they are the problem, but I do know know for sure that they would prevent it from running.

My guess is that you have a fuel problem (measure the pressure in the rail for starters) or intake leaks.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

I do have a pretty shady TB gasket... I'll replace it in the morning and return with results.

Fill the coolant system. The ecu monitors coolant temp and modifys the fuelling of the engine according. With no water in the system the sensor will just read ambient temp.

Besides that, it won't take long at all to crack a head without any coolant in the system.

ok yeah thats what I was thinking. When I put the cooling system and coolent in tomorrow hopefully that fixes my problem.

The car only runs for a few seconds at max. I couldn't imagine that cracking the head could it?

Now but when your talking about half a minute....if the engine is idling...thats 800rpm....400 revloutions, 400 big freaking fires have occured, things get hot.

It will be sweet as long as you put even just water in it, if you are worried about dumping it soon. Just don't run it empty.

coolant is now in the car.

i am posting for synchro325is cause everything is fresh in my brain.

currently, the car still only idles on its own for 2 to 4 seconds, it can be kept running with a slight touch of the throttle. We pulled the plugs and everyone was dry as a bone and cylinder 5 was not even covered in carbon.

we have alot of fuel on the return side of the rail, after the FPR.

we have searched for vacuum leaks but to no avail.

also changed all the relays with not to much of a change

                toughts:
                1. injectors not firing properly
                2. bad AMF
                3. vacuum leak we are not seeing
                4. plugs are no good... but being dry is not pointing me in this direction

these are just thoughts. now that we have put coolant in and you all can stop worry and bickering about that and focus on the actual issue at hand. We have provided you with a large amount of information and if there is anything else i will provided it asap. Please ask if it will help to diagnose.

thank you in advance, I know this community is capable of pointing us in the right direction. please pm me or synchro325is if there is more information needed. or ask here. we will both be check frequently, thank you all for the help.

Since the engine will fire, but not idle, the most likely cause will be intake leaks. Unless you have run a smoke test on the intake you don't know if there are any intake leaks or where they are. Only after any possibility of an intake leak is eliminated should other possible causes be considered.

Whether or not you had coolant in the engine had no bearing on this.
