    87 m20b25 into a 88is

I just finished up putting a motor from a 87 325is into a 88is. I am not getting spark or fuel. Is there a wire trick I am forgetting about with this early model motor being put into a late model? The only difference I am seeing are the wires that are right next to where the DME and harness connect but I didn't think these provide any signal for the DME to do its thing.

As an aside, this is illegal as far as I know.

I believe it is illegal to swap in an engine older than the chassis. Not that anyone will likely find out.

I can't think of anything either. Just an engine swap right? using the 88 engine harness? or 87? I assume you changed the water pump to the later style right?

Yeah, cooling system is the only thing I could think of. And I did change every cooling thing for the late model style. I used the 87 harness. I could always change it out if need be but I cant think of why I would need to.

Use the original engine harness!! (Not the 87) Everything will work perfectly.

Is there any difference besides the fuel rail?

yeah, didn't know 87 harnesses were useless. Tossed the 88 harness in and drove off. I also had to change the starter and fuel rail harness. This motor has a lot more oomph than the motor with 441K had.
